Brooklyn Whelan: Painter / Scribbler / Designer: Sydney

“It is what it is.”

Name: Brooklyn Whelan
Occupation: Painter / Scribbler / Designer
Hometown: Sydney, Australia
Currently residing: Bondi, Sydney

One thing you may or may not know about Brooklyn is that he was the Art Director for Tracks surf magazine for the past 6 years. Brooklyn has also earned a reputation for his photography, paint and illustration skills. His most recent solo show ‘Fantastic Damage’ (which sold out) at China Heights in Sydney was a huge success and he is already planning his next exhibition for later this year. Hanging out with Brooklyn you instantly feel his humble nature and positive attitude to everything he does. Designer, typographer, illustrator, painter, photographer and professional teenager, Brooklyn has a rare combination of street-cred and professionalism which has made him one of the most respected designers/artists today. AR captured a glimpse of his creative space…

When I was a child I wanted to be… Lots of far fetched things.

The studies I took to get where I am now were… Graffiti, Skateboarding, growing up in a big city + keeping an open mind.

I’m inspired by… Most things around me.. Also weather patterns, future type shit and my Fiancee.

The tools I can’t live without are… Pens, paper and paint.

The obstacles that have come my way… Just a small pinch of life at times.

The highlights over the past 12 months have been… Selling out my debut solo show at China Heights in March.

Advice I have to share for those who want to get into this profession… Stay busy, passionate and humble.. Let your work do the talking.
