Georgia Hill: Typographer: Sydney

I’m most creative when I’m away from the pressure of making things for deadlines or my own expectations, and just seeing what will happen.

Georgia Hill is an illustrator and artist, specialising in personal projects, branding, murals, installations and exhibitions. Originally from Newcastle, she has been based in Sydney for some years building her creative presence.

In 2012, Hill moved to Berlin to travel and be inspired by the creative city. Whilst there Hill worked with The Michelberger Hotel creating hand-drawn artworks for their establishment. In fact, Georgia was in Berlin when Almost Real was in Berlin – small world!

Hill’s work has been a process over time, developing her unique style with integrity and consistency. AR had the pleasure to hang out and have a chat in her studio…

Name: Georgia Hill
Occupation: Artist and illustrator
Hometown: Bolwarra, NSW, Australia
Currently Location: Sydney, Australia

When I was a kid I wanted to be… at first an artist, then architect, then fashion designer, then interior design, then graphic designer, and back to artist again.

The studies I took to get where I am… I studied Visual Communications at UTS, however it’s also been a long process of forcing myself to educate myself along the way – following through on weird things that interest me, travel, reading – it all ties back in eventually!

I’m most creative when… I’m away from the pressure of making things for deadlines or my own expectations, and just seeing what will happen.

The latest project I’m working on… Walls!

The tools I can’t live without… Black and white paint.

I’m inspired by… People who develop their own work and style consistently, independently and with a strong ethic – not just in art or illustration but all disciplines.

I’m currently reading… The Keith Haring journal/book I bough in New York…last October. So very very slowly reading.

The website I hang out on the most… I’m probably on my phone more than websites, and it’s pretty all Instagram!

I’m currently listening to… this weird moody 4am playlist I made for (but have so far failed to send to) Maddy Young

Digital Technology… is a necessity I like to pretend I can do without

Travel is… pretty much my goal right now.

I would like to travel… more, alone, everywhere.

My travel essentials are… iphone/music, sketchbook, money, good trainers, black jeans, a decent jacket, and sunglasses, the rest I can pretty much take or leave!

One thing I would like to do but haven’t got around to it yet… spend months in a different country just to learn the language. That or go on some very Brutalist Architecture-related tour of Europe.

The obstacles that have come my way… Are mainly in my own head, so it’s more about the way you look at things – I’m trying problem solve more than see things as total road-blocks.

The highlights over the past 12 months have been… feeling my style develop in a really strong way, but then also realising I still have a lot of things to get faster at, know more about, think about – so realising this is a big long trip rather than a sprint.

Advice I have to share for those who want to get into this profession… you have to put in real time, and real work – take the time to build your own style and look at your own influences and direction, and not just follow the path of others.

Do What You Want… I can’t argue with that!
